ABOUT olivier

Olivier van der Hagen (1976) is a self-taught photographer who only discovered the genre of street photography when he was 38 years old. Before his 40th birthday, it had become more than  a passion, a term that has been eroded a bit these past years anyway. An inner drive compels him to go out and explore, even in most familiar places.

Up until 2014 Olivier had been shooting intermittently and without a specific direction or purpose. That changed when he saw the movie Smoke (1995, Wayne Wang & Paul Auster), which beautifully showed how someone could take a photo of the same place, every morning at the exact same time and still have every single image be different to all the preceding ones. That inspired him to immerse himself in all things street photography and he has never looked back, eager to see where this never ending learning curve takes him. He loves using his camera to capture what goes unnoticed by the masses and is thrilled by the process of sharpening his eye with every shot. Getting lost and shooting in a city is when he reaches the elusive flow state - tuning into a city's rhythm and vibe is what he loves doing the most

Olivier is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. For business inquiries, feel free to contact him.
